If you’re searching for a well-loved dog park in Chicago, Illinois, look no further than the Challenger Dog Friendly Area. Located conveniently just north of Irving Park and tucked alongside the Red/Purple Line tracks, this long, narrow dog park offers dog owners the perfect spot to let their pups run free. The park features both asphalt and packed dirt surfaces—great for outings in any weather, though the concrete can be tough on some paws. You’ll also find several pet-friendly trails and grassy areas within the larger surrounding park, making it easy to mix up your walks.
Challenger Park is enclosed, allowing dogs to play off-leash in a secure environment. The space includes water fountains (with some reviews noting intermittent functionality), baby pools and hoses in the summer for playful pups, and plenty of seating for humans. Shade and sunny spots are both available so you can always find a comfortable place to relax. Ample parking is available in adjacent lots or on nearby streets, and there’s even a pet treat store just across the street for an extra treat after playtime. The park is well-maintained and typically features a friendly and responsible community of owners. Though trains can be noisy and the park can get crowded during peak hours, its cleanliness and social atmosphere make it a favorite among local pet parents.
Very artist area great for the pooch and a lovely art walk to see the Art panels along the cemetery.
Nice but the noise from the passing trains makes this barely a stress free spot to play with your dog
We’ve been twice now and our pup loves it. At first it’s odd because it’s right next to the train but it’s wonderful. The other dogs are friendly and playful. Most humans have been friendly too and understanding of our little jumper. The water fountain helps out a lot. They have pools on hot days and a hose that you can use to fill them up if you want and your dog likes that sort of thing. People are really pretty great at taking care of the park so everyone can enjoy.
This is a long, narrow park, tucked alongside the Red/Purple Line tracks just north of Irving Park. It’s half asphalt, which is great in inclement weather, but otherwise a bit harsh on paws. The other half is packed dirt, which is adequate when dry. The water fountain generally does not work, which is disappointing. Parking is relatively easy in the adjoining lot or nearby streets. Not a bad place for your dog if you’re in the neighborhood, but this place isn’t quite up to par with other dog parks in the area.
Pretty nice, out-of-the-way dog park in the Buena Park area. There’s a decent amount of space for dogs to run; there’s water (except in the winter); it’s never very crowded; and the dogs (and their people) are cool. It’s literally right underneath the El tracks, so most of the time you can expect to have to endure the roar of the Red Line trains every 5 or 10 minutes. That’s not ideal for every dog. And it would be awesome if they could extend the boundaries of the dog park to include some of the copious grassy area that extends north to Montrose. But overall, I’m really glad this park is here.
