We’ve driven by this dozens of times on our way somewhere but have never stopped. It is a wonderful place to explore, observe birds and other wildlife, and learn about the ecology of the area. We’re lucky that New York preserves areas like this. The trail is fairly accessible and there is a ramp into the facility.
I came here to do the wildlife drive and it was a very relaxing experience. There weren’t much people on a Monday morning. Unfortunately I didn’t see much birds, but for these things, you just have to be lucky to see certain animals.
On trip across country, decided to drive through refuge, while the visitor center was closed, the the drive was open. This time of year there is limited water areas, we were able to see a few sand hill cranes, osprey and greater yellow legs. Overall though very few other birds visible or singing. Latter half of drive along interstate noisy, disappointing.
Montezuma Wildlife Refuge was absolutely amazing! I loved the scenic drive it was peaceful, beautiful, and full of surprises around every corner. The variety of birds was incredible, and it felt like every stop offered something new to see. Whether you’re a bird lover, a nature enthusiast, or just looking for a relaxing and inspiring outing, this place is a must-visit. I can’t wait to go back and experience it again!
Visiting Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge was an unforgettable experience. Nestled in the heart of the Finger Lakes region in New York, this serene sanctuary is a paradise for bird watchers, photographers, and anyone looking to reconnect with nature.
The scenic drives and walking trails are beautifully maintained and offer stunning views of wetlands, marshes, and open water. I was amazed by the sheer variety of wildlife—especially the birds! I spotted great blue herons, bald eagles, and a variety of other birds. The observation towers give you a panoramic view of the habitat, and the peaceful quiet lets you truly soak in the surroundings.
The visitor center is also a great stop—informative displays, helpful staff, and clean facilities. It’s clear the refuge is not only well-loved but also well-cared for. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just looking for a peaceful day out, Montezuma offers something special.
Highly recommend bringing binoculars, a camera, and a sense of wonder.
