Henderson-Swasey Town Forest in Exeter, New Hampshire is a beloved spot for outdoor enthusiasts, including those with four-legged companions. This extensive, pet-friendly trail system offers scenic paths for hiking, mountain biking, and walking, surrounded by local wildlife and beautiful New England scenery. The trails feature a variety of terrain, from rocky sections to bridges over streams, making each visit unique. Poop bag dispensers are available at the Oaklands parking lot, and visitors are expected to clean up after their pets. The forest is also a wonderful destination for families, with proximity to play areas and options for exploring local wildlife, from turtles and beavers to unique bird calls at night. If you’re looking for a natural escape in Exeter, NH, Henderson-Swasey Town Forest is a top pick for both you and your pup.
I recently hiked the Green Loop here for the first time in July and unfortunately had a pretty rough experience. The bugs were insane—definitely come prepared with bug spray if you’re planning to visit during summer months. On top of that, the trail markers were either confusing or completely missing in some areas. I got lost six times trying to follow the loop, which is not something I usually struggle with. I’ve hiked a fair amount of moderate trails, but this one was a challenge because of how unclear the directions were. At many points, there were overgrown bushes covering the path, and the maps at the trailhead didn’t help at all—no indication of where I was or how to get back on track.
If you’re a seasoned hiker, maybe you’ll find this trail more manageable, but I’d recommend sticking to a different spot if you’re new to the area or want something more straightforward.
Easy-going trails with plenty of room for parking. This trail system in here is common for biking and hiking. If you’re out hiking in warmer months be cautious of bikers. If you’re biking, be cautious of hikers.
I meandered through the majority of the trails in Henderson-Swasey Town Forest, specifically the north side of Gas Line trail. On this side, the blazers can be hard to spot at points, but navigating is still manageable with using AllTrails.
Fantastic hiking trail! It could be marked alot better! Even regulars who bike, run, hike could remark the trees with the trail color. We even observed fresh moose tracks.
Great trails!!!! Features rocks, bridges, streams, and more! So many trails to choose from!! Make sure you bring a map! All dogs MUST BE LEASHED! Clean up after your pup, poop bag dispenser at Oaklands parking lot. Skill levels vary from easy to mostly moderate! Trails are used for hiking and mountain biking
A great hiking, walking, mountain biking and possibly a good cross country skiing system of trails! I didn’t notice any mosquitoes or biting insects. Quite a few side trails. You may see a train go by at the parking area. Entrance is right next to the railroad bridge.
I recommend bringing water, comfortable walking or hiking shoes, bug repellent and sunscreen. A hat would be great. If you bring a 🐕, you are required to take the droppings with you. The main trail could be difficult for the feet for 🐕 s because of the rocks. You may want to hike first before you bring Fido.
Baby strollers that are designed for trails I would recommend.
I look forward to walking in the fall foliage. Parking is free.
Update: Sunday morning 🌅, December 2020; Wanted a place that was quiet to park, drink my coffee ☕ and read my newspaper 🗞️. Quite a few cars and people walking in. Trail is popular all through the year.
