Nestled in a quiet corner of East Orange, Soverel Park is the perfect escape for families and dog owners seeking a peaceful day outdoors. The park is known for its clean surroundings, well-maintained walking track, and variety of recreational amenities including basketball courts, a baseball field, tennis courts, and an upgraded playground. Locals fondly recall its ties to the community as the childhood park of Whitney Houston, making it a historic and unique destination for residents and visitors alike.
Dog lovers will appreciate that Soverel Park is a pet-friendly green space, welcoming leashed dogs on its open fields and walking paths. While not a dedicated off-leash dog park, the wide-open spaces and tranquil environment make it a comfortable spot for dog walking and playtime. The park offers shade from mature trees, seating areas, accessible restrooms (though availability may vary), and wheelchair accessibility throughout. Whether you’re looking for pet-friendly trails, a place for family outings, or just a quiet spot in East Orange, Soverel Park is a local favorite.
Well it was closed at the time due to the virus, I happen to be in town so I was able to sit in my car in the parking lot while on my lunch break, it was a nice sunny day and of course the park was empty which added to the beauty and stillness. This park I knew about as a kid growing up in East Orange but spent very little time in it because I lived in a completely different part of town, but as grew older I remember seeing summer basketball leagues there and they would play under the lights, it brought back fond memories of the 1970’s. And for those who enjoy seeking history this is the child hood park of the late great music legend Whitney Houston, who I’m sure spent many summer days just being a kid, while I was sitting there I wondering what part of the park did she spend most of her time in, it brought a smile to my face imagining her playing in this park. The tennis court is in excellent condition, of course there’s a basketball court, well kept baseball diamond, an upgraded play area for the younger children, basically the park looks the same that it did 30 years ago.
A very good entertainment night.
Nothing but pure love
It was nice park to throw a little cookout with the family. Clean, it wasn’t congested, it’s like a small nugget tucked away that not too many people know about
Bathrooms seems to be indefinitely closed. Some people seem to think sitting down on the track instead of making use of the many picnic tables provided are a better alternative.
Otherwise, it’s a nice park in an urban area and it can definitely use some help from Mayor Swavey Greene.
The park is very well kept and quiet. Has a great playground for young kids, a great walking track, basketball courts and a small open field area. If you want to go to a park that is not too busy, I definitely recommend it.
