Catamount State Forest, nestled in the rolling green hills of Colrain, Massachusetts, is an ideal spot for dog owners who love exploring the outdoors. With miles of scenic, pet-friendly hiking trails, lush forest landscapes, and historic features like the old schoolhouse monument, this state forest is perfect for four-legged adventurers and their humans. Visitors rave about the forest’s beauty, the wide-open spaces for pups to roam, and the tranquil setting away from busy crowds—just be ready for some hills and remember the bug spray in summer!
While Catamount State Forest doesn’t have a traditional fenced dog park, it offers accessible parking, a spacious pavilion with shelter and seating, clean restrooms, and plenty of open areas where dogs can enjoy on-leash walks and off-leash fun when it’s quiet. Awesome hiking trails! Green mountains are not the Rockies, but offer a much different experience.

It’s so awesome to take the dogs and I have gone through many of the trails which are great if you like to go uphill. But, the road ends up being only enough for one car and the jeeps and trucks have wrecked it by four wheeling in the spring/summer wet season causing huge pits and mosquito beds. It’s only nice when there is nobody else around. Rednecks seem to wreck a lot of things.

Awesome place to go for a hike and enjoy the scenery. Unfortunately there aren’t many trail maps available (in print or online), but popular paths can be located via Strava Heat Maps or other hiking/trail apps. The old schoolhouse monument is very interesting, as are the remnants of cellar holes and rock walls (around the southern half of the forest). McLeod Island has beautiful views, but don’t expect to find much else on it. Expect to tackle some hills (there isn’t much flat land around here) and definitely pack a lot of bug spray in the summer.
