Whitewater Preserve is a standout destination for pet owners looking for a dog-friendly adventure near Palm Springs. Known for its cool, year-round stream and ample shade, this nature preserve features several pet-friendly hiking trails and a small, fenced dog park. It’s a great escape from the desert heat and offers stunning scenery, unique cliff formations, and a peaceful setting for both you and your furry friend. Parking is available on-site and along the road during busy times, and admission is free.
The dog park at Whitewater Preserve is modest in size, with dirt ground and basic amenities, including a couple of chairs and some water. While there is limited separation for small and large dogs, it provides a safe, fenced space for your dog to run, play fetch, and socialize—off-leash—especially during regular Saturday meetups. Beyond the park, leashed dogs are welcome on many of the preserve’s scenic trails, making it one of the best pet-friendly hiking locations in Southern California. Whether you’re looking for a quick stroll, a challenging hike, or a relaxing picnic, Whitewater Preserve is truly a must-visit for any local or visitor traveling with their dog.
Why can we not mountain bike on some of these trails???? So disappointing. Sightseeing on a bike would be so awesome in these areas. Please consider! I’m talking about XC mountain biking not downhill MTB where it messes up the trails. XC is a moderate pace while not shredding. Thank you
Truly One of California’s Beauties!
From the informative, educational, incredibly picture visitor center with places to have nature walks, explore, and picnic and camp too, to the vast, white water, style trails, running, rivers and stunning wildlife, this is absolutely one of our favorite trails so far! Actually, there are several trails, ones that wind around through canyons visiting the red dome, you could go all the way to the PCH! Do not miss this as a visitor, and if you are a local and you love to hike you definitely want to make regular visits to this remarkable location. so grateful that this preserve is maintained and here for all of us.
Nice spot to take the dog hiking! (That’s also free!) I did Red Dome and the Canyon View Loop. Red dome was pretty easy and flat. The “red dome” itself isn’t too exciting, but it’s a nice easy hike through the desert.
The canyon view loop is a challenging climb up switchbacks with stunning views! I think it’s a much more rewarding hike if you physically able.
All in all, good place to take your dog if you’re in Palm Springs and want to hike.
This place preserves a rare, year-round fresh water running stream, right here in SoCal. We are so torn between sharing, and keeping the secret. We just hope that you will visit, enjoy, and leave it all for the better.
