Crag Crest Trail offers an unforgettable hiking experience atop the scenic Grand Mesa, making it one of the most sought-after pet-friendly trails near Cedaredge, Colorado. Known for its breathtaking panoramic views, wildflowers, and serene Rocky Mountain air, this trail is perfect for dog owners looking for a rewarding outdoor activity with their furry companions. The trail is moderately trafficked and ranges from 6.5 to 10 miles depending on the loop or shuttle option, featuring both gentle and steep segments ideal for hikers and their pets who enjoy a bit of a challenge.
This dog-friendly hiking destination features a well-maintained trail system, vault restrooms, and a spacious parking area for convenience. Please note that leashes are recommended, especially along the narrow ridge crest, to ensure your dog’s safety. While amenities like fenced play areas or water stations aren’t available, visitors praise the trail’s natural beauty, peacefulness, and ample opportunities for exercise and bonding with pets in the great outdoors. Remember to pack out all waste to keep the trail pristine for everyone! Nearby, there’s also the County Line area, which is known for being particularly pet-friendly.
This trail delivered quintessential Colorado Rocky mountain highs. It was moderate in traffic. To be expected on a mid July summer day. The wildflowers were going off, the air was fresh. The drop offs were steep. It was a hike I had wanted to do for a long time. I’m so glad I found a friend and got to it early in the AM. The 6.5 mile version with a two car shuttle option saved some time and we got it done in about 4 hours. The peak is over 11k feet so be prepared by acclimating and hydrating. Please remember to pack out what you pack in so it’s pristine for the next person to discover. Also, if you find trash left by others just pack it out with your own!
Lots of snow in may up top, some fun clambering on the ridge. Gorgeous views. 10 mile round trip loop we thought it was 6 until halfway through haha
Nice, short trail that leads to an easy summit. Lots of satellite trails in the area that criss-cross. So it’s easy to make loop hikes in the area. The summit lies at the high point of a ridge crest. It’s the highest point on the Grand Mesa.
Great views.
Beautiful hike up to the crest with stunning views at the top. We didn’t do the whole loop but doubled back from the highest point at about 4 mi.
This is my all-time favorite trail. It has everything! The top gives 360 degree views. Keep in mind that the trail crest is extremely narrow on top, so you might want to keep that in mind when bringing a rambunctious dog or child. Once you cross over the crest you might want to turn around and go back down. Further down, on the other side of the loop, there is a lot of logging and gets pretty hot and ugly.
