🐾 Kids at the Dog Park: Real Stories, Safety Risks & Smarter Solutions

Located conveniently at 6001 Ager Rd, Hyattsville, MD, Heurich Dog Park is a favorite community spot for dog owners looking for a spacious, pet-friendly environment in Prince George’s County. Situated next to playgrounds and turf fields, the dog park offers a welcoming area for dogs to play and socialize off-leash. The park features dedicated spaces for both large and small dogs, benches for owners, dog waste bag stations, and water access (bring bowls just in case). Wheelchair accessible parking and entrances make this park an accessible option for all visitors.
Dog owners appreciate the park’s vibrant social scene, especially during weekday evenings. The park’s size and division between small and large breeds help ensure comfort and play safety for everyone. While the natural grass and plentiful seating are perks, visitors are encouraged to help keep the park clean by picking up after their dogs to maintain a welcoming and pleasant environment for all. Its proximity to kid-friendly facilities also makes it an excellent option for families with both children and pets seeking pet-friendly trails and outdoor fun in the Hyattsville area.
Nice dog park attached to a larger park with playgrounds and turf fields. The dog park is divided for small dogs and big dogs. Bring bottles and/or bowls. There’s water and poop bag stations. There are also benches for us humans to sit and relax while the pooches (at least mine) run around.
Great park with great people and dogs for my dog and I to socialize with. Best time to go is between about 4:30 and 7:30 on week nights, there’s almost always a crowd there then to really tire the dog out!
The large dog park is not well kept and the amount of poop waiting to be stepped in is absolutely ridiculous. My first (and probably last) experience here is very disappointing.
We were excited to find a large dog park so close when we moved to Hyattsville, as we’ve always enjoyed taking our dogs out to play. Unfortunately, we won’t be returning. When we visited, there were four other dogs with two owners who weren’t paying attention at all. The owners didn’t pick up after their dogs or recall them when needed. One of the dogs even got into a fight with ours, and the owner stayed glued to their phone the whole time. Additionally, I suspect some of the dogs weren’t fixed/neutered.
For now, we’ll make the 30-minute drive and pay for Bark Social in Bethesda, where every dog is required to be up to date on shots, fixed and registered. It’s a shame there isn’t a better, more responsible option nearby!
The dog park is big and nice with the grass. There are a lot of benches for the dog owner to sit and watch their dog. However I wish all dog owners clean up their dog poop. There are too much poop in the grass.
