Located near Parkton, Maryland, the Gunpowder: Bunker Hill and Mingo Fork Loop offers scenic, well-maintained pet-friendly trails amid tranquil surroundings. This is an ideal spot for dog owners seeking dog-friendly hiking through woodlands, along rivers, and with access to refreshing water where you and your pup can cool off. The trails are popular among locals and visitors alike, making it a welcoming community destination for both dogs and their humans.
While not a traditional fenced dog park, this loop provides various natural amenities: riverside areas for dogs to dip their paws, picnic spaces for families, and trail connections for longer adventures within Gunpowder State Park. Ample parking is available at the main lot, though note the rough road leading in. Restrooms (available seasonally) and camp sites are nearby, and the peaceful setting makes it easy to unwind with your furry friend.
Well maintained state park. It’s surrounded by a quiet neighborhood so you get a lot of locals and families with their pets along the trails. People who visit are respectful of the place and keep it clean. Did a nice trail run thru park. Nice scenery
Great little trail in the Gunpowder State park. I took my dog Paisley out for an evening stroll and loved every minute on this short trail that took us to the Gunpowder where took take and relaxed to the sound of the river. Awesome gem!
Nice spot for a hike with your pets. Great place for a picnic or to let the kids run free. Dip your toes in the water or cool your pet off. Bring lots of hydration!! The road leading to the parking lot is very rough and probably not suited for modified or lowered vehicles.
Quick trail hike that connects to the even more Gunpowder trails to make it a worthwhile time in the woods. This trail has a bit of erosion so be careful. Also, watch out for the ground bees (yellow jackets) in the late summer/early fall.
At the end of the trail where the big parking lot picks up you will find bathrooms (closed during the winter) down the small paved road, as well as camp sites and river access. A perfect spot to dip your feet, hang with friends or get some solitude with nature.
Peaceful place to hike. It feels like you are in the wilderness, despite being a mile from the interstate. Trails are well-maintained. Take the Gunpowder South up to the Dam for a good hike along the river, only a couple “big” climbs.
