Located in Rocky Point, New York, Paumanok Path Trail Head serves as the gateway to pet-friendly trails winding through the scenic Pine Barrens. This spot is perfect for dog owners looking for a dog-friendly hiking experience on Long Island, with access to the famous Paumanok Path—stretching from Rocky Point to Montauk Point for over 120 miles. Whether you’re seeking a leisurely walk or a longer adventure, this trail offers ever-changing, hilly terrain and a chance to explore the natural beauty of the area with your canine companion.
The trail features a small parking lot, with overflow available at a nearby shopping center, and is best suited to leashed dogs due to the narrow, sometimes overgrown paths. While there aren’t dedicated dog park amenities like fenced play areas or water fountains, the trail’s remote feel and local significance—Paumanok means “Land of Tribute”—make it a unique destination for pet owners who prefer hiking to traditional dog parks.
The NYSDEC does not maintain their trailheads like they used to. Sites are overgrown and often full of trash from inconsiderate users and dumpers.

The trail is so narrow you have to walk single file. Overall it’s ok if long island is the furthest you’re willing to go for hiking. Almost any place off LI is better.
