West Hills Park is a spacious, natural retreat perfect for dog owners seeking pet-friendly trails in Huntington, New York. Renowned for its peaceful walking and hiking trails, the park boasts wide-open green spaces, making it a top pick for outdoor enthusiasts and their furry companions. Free parking and an easy-going atmosphere add to the appeal, offering visitors a relaxed and welcoming experience.
This dog park is part of a larger recreation area, featuring dog runs, horse trails, and unmarked paths through both wooded and open landscapes. While dogs can enjoy off-leash time in the designated run, pet owners should be prepared for a rustic outing—expect sandy, rocky trails, minimal markings, and a few muddy or root-covered sections. Although the park is well-loved for its natural setting and occasional sightings of local wildlife, be mindful of seasonal bugs and bring repellant. West Hills Park stands out for its unique, semi-wild charm, perfect for adventurous dogs and owners alike.
A LOT OF BUGS AND (HORSE?) POOP! It’s good to walk your dog but it’s a little easy to get lost. Not a lot of trail markings. Lots of roots and mud. It is fun when it’s before bug season lol my dog likes coming but a lot of turns you can’t see if anyone’s coming until they’re very close which is a little hard if you’re dog is startled easily lol
Great walking trails with a dog run and trails for horseback riding.
It’s very large and supposedly haunted. It’s not very difficult to hike just a few inclines. It has a very spooky vibe it’s nice.
Parking is free. This loop contains unmarked, sandy, and rocky trails. The trails aren’t well maintained and there is dog poop everywhere. There is an abnormal amount of bugs here that stick onto your clothing (bug spray needed). While walking I came across a huge deer and heard growling in the distance. A local told us that she’s been hiking there for over 20 years and that the park is filled with foxes.
Beautiful Park!
West Hills Park is a hidden gem. I really enjoyed the peaceful trails and the wide-open green acreage — perfect for a relaxing walk, connecting with nature, or just unwinding. It’s clean, well-kept, and has a welcoming atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit!
