Located at 51 Pocahontas Rd, Fort Foster Gate House is a hidden gem and one of the most scenic dog-friendly destinations in Kittery Point, Maine. Open year-round with all-season dog access, this coastal park offers pet-friendly trails, access to rocky beaches, grassy picnic areas, and beautiful spots for ocean kayaking. Guests rave about the well-maintained grounds and ample parking (with a $20 entry fee that helps keep the park pristine).
What sets Fort Foster apart for dog owners is its relaxed, pet-friendly vibe and natural beauty. Spend time walking your pup along the shore, explore tide pools, or enjoy sunsets and secluded picnics. With plenty of open space, benches, and tide-watching opportunities, it’s great for both dogs and their humans. While restrooms are available, they can be a walk away on busy days—but the convenience of parking and flexible, dog-friendly policies more than make up for it.
I’ve been to the Fort a number of times over the years and always enjoyed it. The location is lovely and the ruins are fascinating when you consider the reasons for their construction. This visit was most pleasant because the day was warm and gentle for mid winter, just a light breeze and modest swells on the sea. I spent 45 minutes walking and was fortunate to see a rare vagrant bird, the beautiful spotted towhee who’s been around more than 3 months. It should be in Mexico but lucky us!
we love the ocean kayaking, pier, playground, benches, grassy area. The bathrooms can seem far away with a child with you but otherwise we love it here.
Super beautiful place. Even though they charge NULL for entry, it is totally worthy because they maintain the place well. All year around dog friendly is the best part, highly recommended!!
Easy to find location with plenty of parking during the winter. Sunset is a must see!
Hidden local gem. Rock beach is the perfect escape from the tourist-filled York and Ogunquit beaches. BBQ, tide pools, picnic. Perfect!
