If you’re searching for a scenic dog park in Abingdon, Virginia or want to enjoy a pet-friendly outdoor adventure, the Virginia Creeper Abingdon Terminus is a must-visit. Loved the trail!! The greenery and the creek that runs along side is so relaxing. Not busy when I arrived, but a large group came by toward the end.
(Sorry, the statue is not at this location. It is downtown historic Abingdon)
Not my thing to share with as many people. Lots of bikes today… but it was beautiful and clean. I just prefer something more rustic. My girl and I got a good 4 miles in, and it was an easy walk. Some people scared me by saying it was all downhill, than uphill when you turn around… I’m sure they are correct, but it is a very slight up/down. Maybe 0.5% nothing to shy away from.
My wife and I have done the trail twice. The first time was the upper end. This time, it was the other end, and although it was a little more challenging, it was very pleasant. We hit the leaves just right. We absolutely love the entire area.
My husband and I visited the Creeper Trail for the very first time. We drove to The Bike Station in Damascus, VA, with our bikes and took a bike and passenger shuttle to Abingdon, VA. Everyone we meet at The Bike Station was so helpful and we highly recommend this shuttle service. If you need a bike or trike to rent, they have many to choose from. It’s about a 20 to 25 minute ride to Abingdon and it’s a 17 mile return bike ride of some of the most beautiful scenery you can imagine. My husband rode an electric bike and I rode an electric trike. It was a very gradual downhill path, but you do need to pedel. Which with a pedel assist electric bike, it makes for a very enjoyable ride, even on a trike. There are no places to stop and purchase a lunch, so bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on your ride. Many beautiful areas to stop and enjoy the views. About half way to Damascus, you will come to a small snack shop and rest area in Alvarado. We noticed many bike riders were parking here to start their trip for a round trip to Abingdon and back. This 8 miles of the trail are the most beautiful in my opinion. The trail would be mostly uphill if riding towards Abingdon, but with pedel assist electric bikes, would be totally enjoyable! During the last 8 miles riding towards Damascus the trail can be a little more challenging for a trike because occasionally the center of the path is covered in grass. But I had no problems. We highly recommend this trail. Unfortunately, because of the hurricane and floods, the bike trail from White Top to Damascus is still closed. I understand that is a more steep decent into Damascus from White Top and some people prefer it because not much peddling is required. I can’t say since I haven’t been on it, but I understand that they are repairing it as quickly as possible so maybe next fall, if not sooner, it may reopen. Lots of restaurants to purchase a meal in Damascus at the end of your ride. We took our ride very slowly, stopping often to enjoy the views and take pictures. It was the last week in August and in the shade was very cool. Shorts were fine, but a light jacket or sweater is needed. It took us over 4 hours. Your time may vary! We were told the most popular and busy times are in July and October! Hope you get to enjoy this ride!!!
What a beautiful entrance to a beautiful wide well maintained trail. I’m only bummed that we didn’t care out enough time to traverse this thing. I love old converted rail lines that are now running, walking, bike trails. It’s so fun to cruise this route thinking what it would have been like traveling this path on an old steam locomotive.
