If you’re looking for an adventurous and dog-friendly hiking trail near Woolwine, Virginia, Rock Castle Gorge, East Trailhead is a scenic and exciting option. This park offers pet-friendly trails that are both beautiful and challenging, making it a fantastic destination for experienced hikers with active dogs. The route includes picturesque creek crossings, wildflowers, berries, scenic overlooks, and opportunities to encounter local wildlife.
Parking is available for a small number of cars at the trailhead, and the trail follows a fire road toward a primitive campground. The complete loop is about 10.8 miles, with one side being notably strenuous and offering breathtaking views from the top. For those seeking easier hiking, there are options to traverse the more gentle side of the loop. The park’s natural setting is perfect for dogs that love the outdoors, but be aware that the terrain is steep and challenging in sections, so it’s best suited for dogs and owners accustomed to rugged trails.
Great hike! Views are pretty and close to primitive coffee market in meadows of Dan where you can get local organic meat for camping and teas, coffee, granola bars and more.
Beautiful hike but get ready because if you do the whole loop it’s tough.
Amazing! It’s definitely a challenge. You need to be an experienced hiker for this one.
Also, I cant respond to a Reuben V’s comment. You need to walk down the fire road, it’s blocked off, and the trail is on the right.
Trail starts at closed gate. There is parking for about six cars. Through the gate the trail follows fire road to primitive campground. Loop is 10.8 miles, one side is strenuous. I walked the easy side using 2 cars. The strenuous side turns off to the right up the hill after gate and creek.
The trail is as advertised, exciting and strenuous. Be advised that it really is quite strenuous and you do need to be in good shape to do this trail. We started from the gorge rather than from the campsite. So we parked at the East trailhead, crossed the bridge over the creek, and started climbing up almost immediately on our right. The first couple miles were quite strenuous and a steep climb. After a while, it becomes less strenuous. The views from the top are all gorgeous, although most of them can be reached by car, if you don’t want to do the hike. The climb down is equally strenuous, and started to level out only in the last 2 miles or so, once you cross the private house. The hike itself isn’t as beautiful and spectacular as you would expect it to be. Some parts, of course, were worth the hike, such as meeting some curious deer who were only a few feet away from us, and looking at us with interest, or walking alongside the creek in bits and pieces, the beautiful pink flowers in the wild, the berries along the hike that you could just eat, our spectacular lunch view and even spotting a bear (from far away, luckily for us!)
